When the Beman Beckwith opened this location behind what was then the Elks Club in 1919, it moved from its old location on Tampa Street and Madison. Beman Beckwith was a multi-purpose business. It was a service station and car dealership for Packard, Hudson, Hupmobile, and Essex. By 1928, the name had changed to Beckwith-Holmes Co.
A parking lot for the Northern Trust Bank, where the Elks Club sat, is now on the corner. Marion Street, a once thriving tree-lined artery through the city, is now seldom traveled after being turned into a mass transit-only byway in the 1980s.
