The $3-million, 117,000 sq. ft., 7-story, modernistic style Federal Building opened in 1964 with the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a prime tenant.

It was renamed the R.L. Timberlake Federal Building in 1979, after Federal Protective Service Guard Robert Lee Timberlake, Jr. who was shot and killed by his own service weapon in the elevator of the complex. The shooter, Michael Wragge, was also shot by other officers but survived. He was found not guilty by reason of mental incompetence. The building now houses the Social Security Administration.
