Gandy Liquors came on the scene in 1949 in south Tampa, offering “below wholesale prices.” It was operated by J.W. Jenkins who also ran the Gulf service station at the corner of Gandy and Bayshore Boulevard. Hollywood’s 1950s were a time when many men dressed in suits to go to work and women donned dresses coiffed in curly hair, and cocktails were served at all social occasions. Cigarettes and liquor were en vogue and any time of day was okay. Music-wise, Frank Sinatra and rockabilly were the themes. Popular drinks included Tom Collins, Singapore Sling, and Mai Tais. Liquor stores, including Gandy Cut Rate Liquors, benefited from those mid-century trends. Henry McNatt began his dry-cleaning business in the 1950s. They now have over 20 locations throughout the Tampa Bay area, including this one where Gandy Liquors used to be.
