Quick consumer loans have long been an adjunct to many people's financial needs. In 1955, GAC Finance had three locations in Tampa offering signature loans as well as money for autos and furniture for up to $300. They were in business through the mid-1970s. Another interesting aspect of this photo that also shows its place in history is the “Elect Nick Nuccio for Mayor” sign. He lost to the incumbent Curtis Hixon in 1955 but was later elected after Hixon died in office in 1956. Looking closely, one can see the advertisement for gasoline for $.28 a gallon in front of the City Service gas station in the background.
Bob Basham and Nick Reader co-founded the PDQ chicken chain, opening their first location here in 2011. Basham was a cofounder and successful Outback Steakhouse chain, and Reader left his job as the Chief Financial Officer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The business remains successful, enhanced by its location directly across the street from H. B. Plant High School in South Tampa.
